A Better Way to Classify Pre-Workout Ingredients

Pre-workout ingredients generally fall into three categories:

  1. Acute ingredients: Can potentially support the workout following a single serving.

  2. Saturation-based ingredients: Must be consumed consistently before their primary benefits develop.

  3. Conditional ingredients: May work acutely, chronically, or only under particular circumstances.

This distinction matters because taking an ingredient before exercise does not automatically make it a pre-workout ingredient.

Ingredients With a Clear Acute Purpose

Caffeine

Caffeine is one of the most established acute performance ingredients. A single serving can increase alertness, reduce perceived effort, and potentially improve endurance, muscular endurance, speed, and power.

Its effects are acute, but individual responses vary considerably. Habitual intake, tolerance, genetics, sleep, dosage, and body size can all affect the experience. More caffeine also does not automatically produce better performance. Excessive amounts can cause anxiety, nausea, an elevated heart rate, impaired coordination, or a subsequent disruption in sleep.

Citrulline

Citrulline increases circulating arginine, which can support nitric-oxide production and blood flow. Its purpose in a pre-workout is generally acute: consume it before training to potentially improve blood flow, muscular endurance, and the exercise-induced pump.

Citrulline does not need to accumulate in muscle like creatine or beta-alanine. However, its effects depend on the form, dose, timing, training style, and individual response.

Arginine is frequently marketed for the same purpose, but oral citrulline generally raises circulating arginine more effectively because much of an oral arginine dose is metabolized before reaching systemic circulation.

Dietary Nitrates

Dietary nitrates- including those supplied by beetroot and standardized nitrate ingredients- support nitric-oxide production through the nitrate-nitrite-nitric oxide pathway.

Nitrates can have an acute application, but they may need to be consumed earlier than a conventional pre-workout. The conversion process takes time and depends partly on bacteria in the mouth. Antibacterial mouthwash may interfere with this process.

Nitrates may also benefit from repeated use, so they can reasonably be classified as both acute and cumulative depending on the protocol.

Sodium Bicarbonate

Sodium bicarbonate acts as an extracellular buffer. It can help the body manage the increasing acidity associated with repeated high-intensity efforts.

Unlike beta-alanine, sodium bicarbonate does not need weeks of supplementation to increase muscular carnosine. It can be used acutely before an appropriate type of exercise.

Its main limitation is gastrointestinal discomfort. The amount, timing, meal composition, and dosing strategy all influence whether someone can tolerate an effective serving.

Glycerol, Sodium and Fluids

Glycerol can support fluid retention when consumed with sufficient water, while sodium helps retain fluid and replace what is lost through sweat. These ingredients may have acute value before long, hot, or high-sweat training sessions.

Their usefulness is conditional. Someone performing a short workout in a climate-controlled gym may not benefit to the same extent as an endurance athlete training outdoors in the heat.

Glycerol also requires enough accompanying fluid to serve its intended purpose. Adding a small amount to a pre-workout without providing an appropriate hydration protocol may offer little practical value.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates can provide immediate fuel for long, intense, or high-volume training. They may be particularly relevant to endurance exercise, two-a-day sessions, prolonged competitions, or athletes who begin training with limited carbohydrate availability.

They are not necessary in every pre-workout. A well-fed person completing a relatively short lifting session may not need intra-workout fuel, while an endurance athlete training for several hours may benefit substantially.

Nootropic Ingredients

Ingredients such as L-tyrosine, choline sources and certain stimulant-adjacent compounds are often included to support focus.

Tyrosine may be most useful when cognitive performance is challenged by stressors such as sleep deprivation, cold exposure, prolonged mental demand, or exhausting exercise. It should not be treated as a guaranteed motivation ingredient under ordinary conditions.

Alpha-GPC, citicoline and other choline donors may support acetylcholine production, but they are not interchangeable, and the evidence for immediate exercise enhancement is not equally strong across all forms and dosages.

Theanine may alter the subjective experience of caffeine by producing a smoother or less anxious feeling for some people. That can improve the user experience, but it should not automatically be described as a direct physical performance enhancer.

Taurine

Taurine is difficult to place in only one category. It may influence cellular hydration, calcium handling, muscle contraction, antioxidant activity, and endurance-related outcomes.

Some research has investigated taurine as a single pre-exercise dose, while other studies have used it consistently. This makes taurine a potentially acute and chronic ingredient rather than a clear example of either category.

Other Popular Acute Ingredients

A number of other compounds are marketed for immediate performance:

  • ATP ingredients are intended to support power output, blood flow, or training volume, although results depend on the specific ingredient and research protocol.

  • Agmatine is commonly marketed for pumps, but its human performance evidence is far less established than its popularity suggests.

  • Ornithine may help address ammonia accumulation during demanding exercise, but the evidence is more limited and context-specific than it is for caffeine or creatine.

  • Theobromine is a longer-lasting, milder stimulant relative to caffeine, but it generally has less direct exercise-performance evidence.

  • Synephrine is primarily used for stimulation and energy expenditure, but its cardiovascular effects and combination with other stimulants require careful consideration.

  • Capsaicinoids and grains of paradise are more closely associated with thermogenesis than with a direct improvement in workout performance.

  • AstraGin, BioPerine and other absorption ingredients are not performance ingredients by themselves. Their value depends on whether they meaningfully improve the absorption or effectiveness of another ingredient in that exact formula.

These ingredients should not all be treated as equivalent simply because they can be found in the same pre-workout category.

Ingredients That Require Consistent Use

Beta-Alanine

Beta-alanine supports the production of carnosine, which helps buffer acidity inside muscle during demanding exercise.

Its primary performance effect is not acute. Beta-alanine must be consumed consistently to increase muscle carnosine. Research commonly uses daily supplementation for at least several weeks.

The tingling sensation caused by beta-alanine is acute, but the sensation is not its performance mechanism. Feeling more tingling does not mean someone has suddenly developed greater muscular buffering capacity.

Creatine

Creatine increases the amount of creatine and phosphocreatine stored in muscle. These elevated stores support rapid energy production during lifting, sprinting, and repeated high-intensity efforts.

One standard dose immediately before training will not suddenly saturate muscle. Creatine works through consistent supplementation.

A loading protocol can raise muscle creatine relatively quickly, while a standard daily amount generally takes longer. Once muscle stores are elevated, consistency matters considerably more than whether creatine is taken 30 minutes before training.

Creatine can still be included in a pre-workout for convenience. However, someone who only uses that pre-workout a few times per week may not consume it consistently enough.

Betaine anhydrous

Betaine Anhydrous is commonly included to support strength, power, training volume, cellular hydration, or body composition. Most positive exercise studies have used it consistently rather than as a single isolated pre-workout dose.

That makes betaine a potentially useful performance ingredient, but not a strong example of an acute one. Reviews of pre-workout formulas have also found that products frequently include less betaine than the amounts used in research.

Carnitine

Carnitine is often marketed as though taking it before cardio will immediately increase fat burning. That is an oversimplification.

Increasing muscle carnitine is difficult, and research protocols examining meaningful changes have generally involved repeated supplementation rather than a single pre-exercise dose. It should not be treated as an acute fat-loss or energy ingredient merely because the word “carnitine” appears on a pre-workout label.

HMB

HMB may have applications involving muscle preservation, recovery, unfamiliar training, or highly catabolic conditions. Those potential benefits are not the same as immediately improving energy, focus, blood flow, power, or endurance during the next workout.

Even if HMB fits someone’s overall supplementation program, it does not necessarily justify occupying several grams of space in an acute pre-workout.

What Ingredients Should Not Be in a Purpose-Built Pre-Workout?

This is where formulation philosophy becomes important.

An ingredient can have legitimate health or performance applications and still be a poor fit for a pre-workout. Every gram added to a formula increases serving size, cost, flavoring difficulty, and the possibility of gastrointestinal discomfort. It may also displace an ingredient that more directly supports the product’s stated purpose.

BCAAs

BCAAs- leucine, isoleucine and valine- are involved in muscle-protein metabolism, but they are not a complete protein. Muscle-protein synthesis requires all nine essential amino acids, not only the three BCAAs.

If someone already consumes sufficient high-quality protein, adding BCAAs to a pre-workout is unlikely to be the missing factor that improves that day’s training performance. They also require a meaningful amount of formula space and can be difficult to flavor.

BCAAs may have situational applications for someone training fasted, consuming inadequate protein, or participating in prolonged exercise. Even then, a complete essential-amino-acid or protein source may be a more comprehensive choice.

More importantly, supporting muscle-protein synthesis or reducing soreness is not the same as acutely increasing energy, power, blood flow, focus, or endurance. BCAAs are therefore usually a poor fit for a tightly formulated pre-workout.

Mushrooms

Cordyceps is frequently added to endurance and “oxygen utilization” products, while lion’s mane is often included for focus. These ingredients may have interesting applications, but their presence in a formula does not mean they work acutely.

Much of the research on Cordyceps has used daily supplementation lasting multiple weeks, and results have been mixed across products, populations, and exercise tests. One study involving Cordyceps militaris reported improvements after three weeks, while a five-week study in trained cyclists found no improvement in aerobic capacity or endurance. Lion’s mane is generally investigated for cognitive or neurological outcomes over repeated use- not for an immediate improvement in workout focus after one scoop.

Mushrooms may also contribute earthy flavors, sediment, and substantial raw-material volume. Unless a specific extract has convincing acute evidence at the included dose, mushrooms generally make more sense in a daily wellness, cognitive, or ergogenic product than in a purpose-built acute pre-workout.

Adaptogens and General Herbal Extracts

Ashwagandha, tongkat ali, fenugreek, ginseng and similar herbs are often added to pre-workouts with claims involving stress, testosterone, vitality, recovery, or long-term training adaptation.

Those are not normally acute pre-workout outcomes.

If an ingredient requires several weeks of consistent use before producing its intended effect, hiding a small dose inside a product taken only on training days is not an intelligent delivery system.

Rhodiola is a possible exception because some evidence suggests it may affect fatigue or endurance after acute use. However, findings depend on the extract, dose, timing and exercise protocol. It would be inaccurate to treat all “adaptogens” as either proven acute ergogenics or completely useless.

The ingredient must be evaluated individually- not justified merely because it belongs to an appealing herbal category.

Vitamins and Mineral Sprinkles

B vitamins participate in energy metabolism, but they do not act like stimulants and do not directly “give you energy” simply because they are consumed before training. Someone with adequate nutritional status should not expect a large acute performance boost from oversized doses of B vitamins.

Minerals can have an acute purpose when they address hydration and sweat loss. Sodium is a clear example. Randomly adding small amounts of magnesium, zinc, chromium or a vitamin blend, however, does not automatically improve the upcoming workout.

Correcting a deficiency can improve health and performance. Taking more of a nutrient immediately before training is not the same thing.

Recovery Ingredients

Collagen, glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM and many antioxidant ingredients may have applications within a broader health or recovery program. That does not mean they belong in an acute pre-workout.

They generally do not improve immediate energy, focus, blood flow, force production or endurance. Some also require substantial doses or long-term use.

A pre-workout does not become more complete simply because it tries to function as a joint supplement, multivitamin, recovery product and performance formula at the same time.

Token-Dosed Ingredients

Perhaps the worst pre-workout ingredient is one that is included only so its name can appear on the label.

A formula may contain an attractive list of amino acids, herbs, mushrooms and branded ingredients while supplying too little of each to reproduce the research behind them. This practice creates the appearance of a comprehensive formula without delivering meaningful exposure.

More ingredients do not automatically create a better product. In many cases, a shorter formula with evidence-based amounts and a clearly defined purpose is the more sophisticated design.

Does This Mean Chronic Ingredients Never Belong in Pre-Workouts?

Not necessarily.

Creatine, beta-alanine and betaine can be valuable performance ingredients. Including them in a pre-workout can make consistent supplementation convenient- provided the product supplies an appropriate amount and is taken frequently enough.

The issue is not whether an ingredient is “good” or “bad.” The issue is whether:

  • It supports the stated purpose of the formula

  • Its dosage reflects the research

  • Its required frequency matches how the product will be used

  • Its timing before training provides a meaningful advantage

  • It justifies the cost and formula space it consumes

A pre-workout can combine acute and chronic ingredients successfully. The label and directions should simply make that distinction clear.

The Standard for a Smarter Pre-Workout

A purpose-built pre-workout should primarily address limitations that could affect the upcoming training session:

  • Insufficient alertness or focus

  • Reduced blood flow

  • Limited muscular endurance

  • High perceived effort

  • Fluid or electrolyte losses

  • Inadequate readily available fuel

  • The demands of repeated high-intensity exercise

Ingredients intended for long-term health, hormonal support, recovery, or general wellness may still be valuable. They are often better delivered through separate products designed to be taken consistently.

The question should never be, “How many ingredients can fit on the label?”

The better question is, “What does each ingredient contribute to the purpose of this formula- and when should that contribution actually occur?”

That is how a pre-workout should be evaluated, formulated, and used.
